Verify a report

Check the paper against the record.

Type the number printed on the front of the report. The record shows what the institute examined, so you can compare it with the paper and with the piece itself.

Where to find the number. On the front of the report, under the title. A jewellery report number starts with IJI-J-, then nine digits. You can type it with or without the prefix.

Three things should agree: the record, the paper and the piece.

What to compare

  1. The recordWhat the register holds for the number: the date of issue, the description, the weight, the grades, the origin and a photo of the piece.
  2. The paperThe report in your hand should match the record line for line, including “Laboratory Grown Diamond” on its front.
  3. The pieceThe description should match what you are holding: the kind of piece, the metal, the number of diamonds and their shape. Compare it with the photo on the record too.

What the prefix means

  • IJI-JFinished Jewellery Report
  • IJI-LLaboratory-Grown Diamond Report
  • IJI-DDiamond Grading Report (natural)
  • IJI-CIdentification Report, coloured stones
  • IJI-PPearl Report
  • IJI-RDescriptive Record

If it doesn’t match

Any difference in description, weight, grade or origin means the document does not belong to this piece. Do not let the piece change hands; bring the piece and the report to any IJI laboratory and we will check both against the register.
